VAT calculator
Choose whether to add tax to a net amount or extract it from a gross amount, then enter the amount and the rate. The rate is your own assumption: the tool does not decide which rate applies to you and is not tax advice. Use it to add VAT to a price or to remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive total.

How to use it
- Choose the operation: “Add tax to a net amount” or “Extract tax from a gross amount”.
- Enter the amount, then the tax rate that applies to you after checking it with the tax authority in your country.
- Read the net amount, the tax amount and the gross total.
- Copy the result if you want to use it in a quote or an invoice.
Example
Add: a net amount of 100 at 15% gives tax of 15 and a gross total of 115.
Extract: a gross amount of 115 at 15% gives 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100 net and 15 tax. Note that taking 15% off 115 gives 97.75, which is a common mistake.
Limits and caveats
- The rate is your assumption. The tool does not know the official rate in any country, or which goods are exempt or zero-rated, and it does not ensure tax compliance.
- The “Example” buttons fill the field with illustrative values only. They are not official rates; verify the rate that applies to you.
- The calculation is for one amount at one rate. Invoices with lines at different rates, or that round each line separately, can differ by small rounding amounts.
- Amounts are displayed rounded to two decimal places, and the third figure is found by adding or subtracting so the totals agree. Three-decimal currencies (such as the Kuwaiti dinar) are also shown with two decimals.
- The largest accepted amount is 1,000,000,000,000 and the largest rate is 1000%.
Questions about this tool
Why can I not just subtract the rate from the gross amount?
Because the tax was calculated on the net amount, not on the total. The correct method is to divide the gross by (1 + rate ÷ 100). Example: 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100, while 115 − 15% equals 97.75, which is wrong.
Which rate should I enter?
The rate that applies to your business and product in your country. Rates differ between countries and change over time, and some goods are exempt, so check the official tax authority or your accountant. The tool only calculates with the rate you give it.
Can I use it for taxes other than VAT?
Yes, for any tax or charge calculated as a percentage of the net amount, such as sales tax. The formula is the same, and the rate remains your responsibility.
How do I calculate VAT?
Multiply the net amount by the rate and divide by 100 to get the VAT, then add it to the net amount for the gross total. At an example rate of 15%, a net amount of 200 carries 200 × 15 ÷ 100 = 30 VAT and a gross total of 230, which is 200 × 1.15 in one step. Enter the rate that applies to you; the tool does not assume any country’s rate.
How do I work out the VAT included in a gross price?
Multiply the gross price by the rate and divide by (100 + rate). A gross price of 230 at 15% contains 230 × 15 ÷ 115 = 30 VAT, leaving 200 net. Choose “Extract tax from a gross amount” to get both figures at once.
