PDF to images

Render the pages of a PDF as real PNG or JPEG images. Choose the resolution in DPI or as a plain zoom factor, and see the resulting pixel size before you convert. Use it to turn a PDF into JPG images you can share in a chat app or drop into a presentation.

Processing and privacy: Your files are processed inside your browser and are not uploaded to any server.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PDF file.
  2. Pick the image format (PNG or JPEG) and, for JPEG, the quality.
  3. Pick the resolution: 72, 96, 150, 200 or 300 DPI, or a zoom factor.
  4. Set a page range if you need one, and check the pixel sizes shown for each group of pages.
  5. Press “Convert”, then download each image on its own or all of them in a ZIP.

Example

A 400 × 300 pt page at 150 DPI gives an 834 × 625 px image, because one inch (72 pt) becomes 150 pixels. At 72 DPI the same page gives 400 × 300 px.

Limits and caveats

  • Tested limits: one file up to 100 MB and 500 pages, and up to 100 pages per conversion. Resolution 36 to 600 DPI, zoom factor 0.1 to 6.
  • Largest image the browser can draw: 8000 px per side and 25 million pixels per page. Any page above that is refused, with its number and its size, before the conversion starts, so you never get a half-finished set.
  • The output is a picture of the page, not text: you cannot select or search the words afterwards. To get the words, use the PDF text extractor.
  • JPEG has no transparency, so pages are drawn on a white background. PNG is larger but lossless.
  • Password-protected or encrypted files are refused; the tool does not bypass protection. Fonts that are not embedded in the file are replaced with the closest available one, so they can look slightly different from another viewer.

Questions about this tool

Which resolution should I pick?

For screens, 96 or 150 DPI is enough. For printing, choose 300 DPI. Remember that doubling the DPI makes four times as many pixels and a file about four times larger.

Why were some pages refused?

Because their pixel size at the chosen resolution is beyond what a browser can draw in one image (8000 px per side, or 25 million pixels). A 5000 × 5000 pt page at 300 DPI would need 20833 px per side. Lower the resolution and try again.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and drawn inside your browser with pdf.js and never leaves your device. Each page’s memory is released as soon as that page is finished.

How do I convert a PDF to JPG?

Choose the PDF, pick JPEG and a resolution, then press “Convert”: you get one JPG per page, downloaded one by one or together as a ZIP. 150 DPI is enough for screens; choose 300 DPI for printing.

Can I convert just one page of a PDF to an image?

Yes. Type that page number in the page range field, such as 3, and only that page is converted. A range such as 1-3, 5 converts several chosen pages.
