Image format converter

Choose the target format and every image is genuinely rewritten in it, with sizes before and after and a clear warning whenever transparency is lost. Typical uses: convert PNG to JPG, convert WebP to JPG for a platform that rejects WebP, or turn JPG into PNG or WebP, for up to 30 images at once.

How to use it

  1. Choose one or more JPEG, PNG or WebP images, or drop them on the box.
  2. Pick the target format: JPEG, PNG or WebP. For JPEG and WebP, set the quality.
  3. If an image is transparent and you convert it to JPEG, pick the background color that fills the transparent areas.
  4. Check the output size and the notes for each file, then download images one by one or all together as a ZIP.

Example

A 400×300 logo.png with a transparent background: converting it to JPEG with a white background gives logo.jpg at the same dimensions with the transparent areas turned white, and the tool warns you about it. Converting it to WebP keeps the transparency.

Converting a photograph from JPEG to PNG usually gives a much larger file, because PNG does not compress photographs well. The tool shows the real size instead of hiding it.

Limits and caveats

  • Conversion is a real re-encode through Canvas, and the tool checks the signature of the output file before offering it. It never just renames the extension.
  • JPEG has no transparency: transparent areas are filled with the chosen background color and cannot be recovered from the output. PNG and WebP keep transparency.
  • JPEG and WebP are lossy at the quality you choose. Converting to PNG loses nothing more, but it cannot bring back what an earlier JPEG already lost, and the file usually grows.
  • A file that is already in the target format is left unconverted with a note, because re-encoding it gains nothing.
  • EXIF data such as location and camera model, and color profiles, are dropped because the image is redrawn; orientation is applied first. Animation is not supported: the output is always a single still image.
  • Tested limits: 40 MB and 50 megapixels per image, up to 30 images at a time. HEIC, GIF, TIFF and SVG are not supported.
  • Saving WebP needs a browser that can encode it. If yours cannot, you get a clear message instead of a file in the wrong format.

Questions about this tool

Is renaming a file from .png to .jpg enough?

No. Renaming does not change what is inside the file, and some stores and programs will reject it. This tool re-encodes the pixels in the new format for real.

What happens to a transparent background when converting to JPEG?

It is filled with the background color you choose, white by default, because JPEG cannot store transparency. To keep it, choose PNG or WebP.

Which format should I use for store images?

JPEG is accepted almost everywhere and suits photographs. PNG suits logos and graphics with transparency. WebP is usually smaller, but check that your platform accepts it.

How do I convert an image to JPG?

Choose the image, pick JPEG as the target format and set the quality, then download the new .jpg file. If the image is transparent, also pick the background color that fills the transparent areas, because JPG cannot store transparency.

How do I convert WebP to JPG?

Choose the WebP file and pick JPEG as the target format: the picture is re-encoded as a real JPG that stores and programs without WebP support accept. You can convert up to 30 images at once and download them together as a ZIP.
