Are my cost and price figures sent to a server when I use the break-even calculator?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, the figures you type are not uploaded anywhere, and the page says so under the result: 'Calculated in your browser. Nothing is sent.' You can enter real supplier costs and margins without worry, with one small precaution on a shared computer.

Why it matters

Break-even inputs are some of the most sensitive numbers a business has. Your purchase price reveals where your stock comes from, your variable cost reveals your margin, and your fixed costs reveal the size of the operation. In a competitor's hands they show exactly how far prices could be cut to squeeze you. You are entitled to know where those numbers go before typing them into any online tool.

What happens when you type a number

  1. You type into the fixed costs, price or variable cost box.
  2. The page's code, already loaded in your browser, reads the number and works out the contribution and break-even on your device.
  3. The result appears as you type, with no submit button and no wait for a server reply.
  4. When you close or refresh the page your numbers are gone, and the boxes return to the built-in example: 10,000, 50 and 30.

Example: you enter confidential fixed costs of 12,000, a price of 75 and a variable cost of 40. The Break-even calculator shows a contribution of 35, a ratio of 46.67%, and an exact break-even of 342.86 rounded up to 343 units, with a note that revenue at that volume is 25,725 and profit is 5. All of it computed on your own machine.

What the tool cannot protect you from

  • The screen itself: anyone beside you, or the next person at the computer, can see the numbers while the page is open. Close the tab on shared machines.
  • The copy result button: it copies the figures to your device's clipboard. If you paste them into a chat or an email, you are the one sending them, so mind where you paste.
  • Browser extensions: some can read the content of any page you open. That is outside the tool's control, so use a browser with only extensions you trust.

Does the tool keep my scenarios?

No, and that is part of the same privacy. There is no account, no history and no autosave. To keep a scenario, copy the result and store it in a file on your own device. If you are gathering the month's spending to arrive at fixed costs, the Expense summary generator also works in the browser, as does the Profit margin calculator.

Common questions

Do I need an internet connection while calculating?

You need it to open the page the first time; the calculation itself runs on your device and does not wait for a server.

Can I use it for my employer's figures?

The tool does not send the numbers, but your company's policy on outside tools is what counts, so follow it.

Why do 10,000, 50 and 30 appear when the page opens?

They are a preloaded example showing how it works, not another user's data. Clear them and type your own.
