How do I crop to a ratio that isn't in the list, like 1.91:1 for a link preview image?

Choose 'Custom' as the crop ratio, then type the two ratio numbers exactly as you were given them: 1.91 and 1, or the pixel size itself, such as 1200 and 628. Both fields accept decimals and large numbers, so you never have to work the ratio out yourself.

Two ways to write almost the same ratio

A custom ratio in the Image cropper is the width divided by the height, so any pair that gives the same division works: 1.91 and 1, or 191 and 100, or the pixel size you were asked for. The only catch is that 1200 ÷ 628 is about 1.9108, not exactly 1.91, so the result can differ by one pixel.

Worked example

A 1600 × 1200 product photo with 1.91 and 1: the box is 1600 × 838, starting at Y = 181.

The same photo with 1200 and 628: the box is 1600 × 837.

A 4000 × 3000 photo with 1200 and 628: the box is 4000 × 2093, starting at Y = 453.

Steps

  1. Open the photo in the cropper and, under 'Crop ratio', choose 'Custom'.
  2. Two fields appear, 'Ratio: width' and 'Ratio: height', set to 3 and 2 by default. Type 1.91 and 1, or the size you were given.
  3. The box reshapes to the new ratio around its center. Drag it until the product sits in the middle of the band.
  4. Download as JPEG or PNG.

If you type zero or leave a field empty, a message appears under it and the download button is disabled, because the ratio is not valid. Accepted numbers are above zero and up to 10000.

Getting exactly 1200 × 628

Cropping sets the shape; it does not change the pixel count. If you need a file of an exact size, open the result in the Image resizer and type a width of 1200 with the ratio locked. A 1600 × 837 crop gives exactly 1200 × 628, while a 1600 × 838 crop gives a height of 629. So when you have a pixel size, type that size itself as the ratio.

Once the image is ready

Upload the image to your site and put its address in the og:image tag. The Open Graph metadata builder writes the full set of tags and shows a rough preview of the link card. Check the current guidance of each platform where you want the card to appear, because platforms display preview images differently and may trim the edges.

Watch out for tall photos: a 1080 × 1920 phone photo leaves only a 1080 × 565 band at 1.91:1, so pick a landscape photo for link cards when you can.

Common questions

Can I type a ratio such as 2.35 and 1?

Yes, any two numbers above zero and up to 10000, decimals included.

Why did the box move when I changed the ratio?

The tool reshapes the box around its center and shrinks it if needed to keep it inside the image.

Is 1.91:1 an official ratio for every platform?

We do not treat it as one. It is a common ratio for link cards, and each platform has its own guidance.
