My WhatsApp Business and Instagram profile picture shows as a circle and cuts my logo. How do I crop it properly?
Upload a square with the logo in the middle and space around it. These apps show the profile picture inside a circle, so the square's four corners disappear. Pick 1:1 in the cropper, center the logo in the box and leave enough margin that its edges stay clear of the circle.
What the circle hides
When you upload a profile picture, the app shows it inside a circle that touches the middle of each side of the square. The circle is the safe area; the four corners outside it are not shown. A wide logo running from edge to edge of the square gets cut at both ends, and a logo with text in a corner loses that text.
The Image cropper does not cut circles; it only makes rectangles. But you do not need a circular crop at all: the app makes the circle, and your job is to supply the right square.
Steps
- Open the logo file in the cropper and choose 1:1.
- The box starts as the largest square in the middle of the image. If the logo is not centered in it, drag it.
- If the square is bigger than needed, shrink it from a corner handle or type a width, then place it so the logo sits exactly in its center.
- Picture a circle touching the middle of each side of the square, and check that the whole logo sits inside it with a margin.
- If the logo is transparent, save as PNG; otherwise JPEG is fine.
A 1200 × 900 logo file at 1:1: the largest square is 900 × 900, starting at X = 150.
If the logo itself is small in the middle of the file, type a width of 760: the box becomes 760 × 760.
Then type X = 220 and Y = 70, and the square sits exactly in the middle of the file, since 220 + 760 + 220 = 1200 and 70 + 760 + 70 = 900.
If the logo touches the edges of the file
Cropping only removes; it never adds space. If the logo fills the file from edge to edge, the cropper cannot create a margin around it. You have two options: ask your designer for a version with space around the logo, or open the file in the Image resizer, type a square size and choose 'Fit inside', which centers the logo in a square and fills the rest with a background color. That adds margin on two sides only, so a wide logo still touches the left and right edges and its ends still fall outside the circle. In that case the version with space from your designer is the real fix.
Tips for a logo that reads in a small circle
- Profile pictures appear tiny in chats and comments. A symbol on its own reads better than a long name.
- A white logo on a transparent background can vanish in some apps' light mode. Try a colored background.
- Use the same square file on all your accounts so customers recognize you quickly.
- Check each app's guidance for the suggested size, since apps change it from time to time.
Common questions
Does the tool crop images into a circle?
No, it crops rectangles only. The app draws the circle when it shows the picture.
Should I upload a large or a small file?
We do not quote an official size. A square of reasonable dimensions usually works; check the app's current guidance.
Why did a white background appear behind my transparent logo?
Because you saved it as JPEG. Choose PNG under 'Save as' to keep the transparency.
