I cropped my transparent logo and the background came out white. How do I keep the transparency?

It happened because you saved the crop as JPEG, a format that cannot store transparency at all, so the cropper fills the transparent areas with white. Change 'Save as' to PNG or WebP, or leave 'Original format' selected if your logo is a PNG, and the background stays transparent after cropping.

What exactly happened

When you open a PNG or WebP in the Image cropper, the tool checks whether it has transparent pixels. If it does and you choose JPEG under 'Save as', a clear warning appears: the image has transparency and JPEG cannot store it, so transparent areas will be filled with white. On download the tool paints a white background first and draws the logo on top, because a JPEG file has no way to store an empty pixel.

The result looks fine on a white page, but shows up as an obvious white box on any colored background, such as your store header or a profile cover.

The right setting for each case

  • Your logo is a transparent PNG: leave 'Original format' or choose PNG. The file keeps the pixels without loss, transparency included.
  • Your logo is a transparent WebP: 'Original format' keeps it WebP with its transparency, but WebP is saved at quality 92, a slight loss. Choose PNG if you want the logo's edges with no loss at all.
  • You need a JPEG for a place that accepts nothing else: save as JPEG and accept the white, or convert the transparent copy later with the Image format converter, which lets you pick the background color instead of white.

Steps

  1. Go back to the original transparent logo file, not the JPEG you downloaded.
  2. Open it in the cropper and leave the ratio on 'Free', or pick the ratio you need.
  3. Drag the box around the logo, leaving a little space so the edges do not clip the letters.
  4. Under 'Save as' choose PNG, and check that the white background warning is gone.
  5. Download and test the file on a colored background to confirm the transparency.

What cannot be fixed

If all you have now is a JPEG with a white background, cropping it again and saving as PNG will not bring the transparency back. The white is part of the pixels now, and PNG will faithfully keep it white. You need the original transparent file, or to ask your designer for it.

Watch for another common case: some logo files downloaded from the web show a gray and white checkerboard that looks like transparency, but the squares are drawn into the image itself. The cropper cannot remove them, because they are real pixels, not transparency.

Common questions

Does saving as PNG reduce the logo's quality?

No. PNG keeps the cropped area with no loss.

Why didn't the warning appear with a JPEG?

JPEG files have no transparency to begin with, so there is nothing to fill with white.

Can I crop the logo into a circle?

No, the tool crops rectangles only. Circular shapes are applied by the platform when it displays the image.
