Why does my packing list give separate totals for 'pcs' and 'Pcs' when they are the same unit?

Because the tool groups quantities by the unit text exactly as you typed it, character by character, so the capital in 'Pcs' makes it a different unit from 'pcs'. The fix is to spell the unit the same way on every line. Spaces around the unit are trimmed, but capitals and spelling are kept as they are.

What you are seeing

In the Packing-list generator there are two lines: 40 with the unit pcs, and 25 with Pcs because the phone keyboard capitalised the first letter. The summary showed:

  • Total (pcs): 40.
  • Total (Pcs): 25.
  • Total quantity: 65, with no unit beside it.

Once we corrected the second line to pcs, the separate lines disappeared and the summary read 'Total quantity: 65 pcs'. Same number, but the second form is what the receiver expects, and it leaves no question about two units in the shipment.

The ways a unit splits without you noticing

  • A capital letter: pcs, Pcs and PCS are three units.
  • Singular, plural or abbreviation: pc, pcs and pieces.
  • Two languages: with the tool's interface in Arabic, a line whose unit you leave empty is filled with «قطعة», while a line where you typed pcs stays pcs. You get two totals for what you consider one unit.
  • Small spelling variants: 'carton' and 'ctn' are different units.

In a three-line example, 40 pcs, 25 Pcs and 10 pieces produced three total lines and an overall figure of 75. Three spellings, three totals.

Why doesn't the tool merge them itself?

Because guessing could merge two units that really are different. One supplier's 'Box' is a small pack of 6, another's 'BOX' is a full shipping carton. Merging them without being asked would give you a wrong total you would never spot. The tool prefers to show you the difference and leave the decision to you.

How to fix it

  1. Look at the summary: a total quantity with no unit means more than one unit is on the list.
  2. Read the 'Total (...)' lines to see exactly which spellings are present.
  3. Correct the unit column on the odd lines to the spelling you chose.
  4. If you copied descriptions and units from another file with mixed capitals, even out the case first with the Text case converter, then paste.

Common questions

Are descriptions case-sensitive too?

Descriptions play no part in the totals at all. Only the unit decides the grouping.

Does a trailing space after the unit matter?

No, spaces at the start and end of the unit are removed before grouping.
