Can I turn a PDF into an editable Word document with its formatting using this tool?

Not with its formatting. The tool gives you the plain text stored in the file, which you paste into Word and style yourself. Fonts, colours and images are not kept, and table columns disappear so that each row becomes one line. If the words are what matter, it is a quick route; if you need the layout, go back to the source file the PDF was exported from.

What you get, exactly

  • The words and figures as stored in the text layer, in reading order for single column documents.
  • Line breaks as they appeared on the page, and an empty line where a new paragraph seems to start.
  • A .txt file or text on the clipboard, with no formatting at all.

What you do not get

  • The font, its size and colour, bold and italics.
  • Images, logos, stamps and signatures.
  • Table structure: a row with the item, unit and quantity in separate cells comes out as one line such as Steel shelf 5 tiers pcs 12, with only spaces where the cells were.
  • Headers and footers as separate elements: they come out as ordinary lines with each page's text.
  • Scanned pages: there is no text in them to begin with, and the tool does no OCR.

When this is enough

When a client sends a letter or proposal as a PDF and you want to reply to it or quote parts of it, or when you want to reuse your returns policy wording in a new document in your own design, the words are all you need. You would be applying your own template anyway.

  1. Open the PDF text extractor, choose the file and pick One combined text.
  2. Extract and copy all the text.
  3. Tidy extra spaces and repeated blank lines with the Whitespace cleaner.
  4. Paste into Word as plain text, then apply the heading and body styles from your template.
  5. Rebuild tables by hand and re-insert images and the logo.

When it is not

If the document is an official form with a fixed design, a long price table with many columns, or a brochure mixing images and text, rebuilding it from plain text will take longer than asking for the original. Ask whoever sent the PDF for the Word or Excel file it came from; they usually have it. If the document is in Arabic, review the extracted text carefully, because some files give Arabic back in visual order or with broken letters, which adds to the work.

Common questions

Does the tool produce a .docx file?

No. The output is text only, to copy or download as a .txt.

Do links survive?

The link text appears if it was written on the page, but the link itself is no longer clickable.

Can I extract the images from the file?

No, this tool is for text only. To see a page with its images, convert it with the PDF to images tool.
