I have two abayas with the same name in different colours and sizes; how do I give each one a different URL?
Put what sets each one apart into the title you convert: colour, size or fabric. The slug generator always gives the same title the same slug, it does not know which URLs you have already used, and it never adds a number to break a tie. Telling them apart is your job; the tool turns your wording into a readable URL.
How the problem happens
You add a black crepe abaya, then a week later a navy crepe abaya, and you type the same title, عباية كريب, for both because the design name is the same. In the slug generator the two titles give the same slug:
عباية-كريب
That is not a bug; it is the design. Every step is a fixed rule with no randomness and no clock, so the same input gives the same result on every device. What your store platform does when you ask for a URL already in use differs between platforms: some may refuse it, some may append a number of their own. Check how yours behaves rather than letting it decide for you.
The fix: the difference goes in the title
Give each product a title for its slug that carries what makes it different:
عباية-كريب-سوداء-مقاس-54
عباية-كريب-كحلي-مقاس-56
The first is 24 characters and the second 23. Each tells the reader what they will find before they open it, which beats a URL ending in a number such as عباية-كريب-2 that means nothing to a customer.
Which difference to use
- Colour, if each colour is its own product page.
- Size, if every size is a separate page, which is less common. If sizes are options within one page, you do not need a URL per size.
- Fabric, season or collection name, such as crepe, chiffon or a Ramadan collection, if the same colour repeats.
Watch the spelling too. كحلي and كحلية give two different slugs, and so do سوداء and سودا. Agree with your team on one spelling for colours and sizes, or your URLs will stop following a pattern.
The steps
- Before adding a new product, search your store dashboard for a product with the same name.
- If one exists, type the title into the URL slug generator with the distinguishing detail, such as colour and size.
- Check that the result differs from the first product's slug, and copy it into the platform's URL field.
- If you have many similar products, put their titles one per line in batch mode and check the output for duplicates before copying.
What if the first product is already live?
Do not change the first product's URL if it is published and customers reach it, since every changed URL needs a permanent 301 redirect. Leave the first one alone and give the new one a distinct slug. With the next product, start from a distinct title.
Common questions
Does the tool add a number automatically if a slug repeats?
No. It does not know your earlier URLs and never adds a date or a number.
Is what I type saved so I can come back to it?
No. Titles and slugs are not stored. Keep your list of URLs in a spreadsheet.
Do the normalization options turn سوداء into سودا?
No. They cover alef variants, ta marbuta and alef maksura only, and do not remove a final hamza.
