Does the VAT calculator work for Bahraini dinar or Omani rial prices with three decimals?

It works for the calculation, with one display limit. The tool calculates exactly, but it shows amounts rounded to two decimals even when you pick BHD or OMR from the currency list. So use it to confirm the method and the size of the tax, then round to the third decimal yourself on the invoice.

What happens with a three-decimal amount?

Take a net price of 12.345 with 10 entered as the rate, purely as an example. Inside the tool the exact result is tax of 1.2345 and a gross of 13.5795. What you see on screen is a net of 12.35, tax of 1.23 and a gross of 13.58.

Notice that even the amount you typed, 12.345, is displayed as 12.35. That is what showing a three-decimal currency with two decimals does. The figures are not wrong, but they are less precise than an invoice in fils needs.

How to use it anyway

  1. Open the VAT calculator, pick the operation, and choose the currency from the list if you like.
  2. Enter the full amount with its three decimals, then the rate you have confirmed applies to you.
  3. Read the result for the size of the tax and the method.
  4. Work the final figure in fils yourself: tax = amount × rate ÷ 100, then round to three decimals using the rule your system follows.

In this example the formula gives 1.2345 and you decide how to handle the fourth decimal. Which rounding rule is expected, up or to the nearest fils, is a question for your accountant.

When it makes no difference at all

If the exact result never goes beyond two decimals, the display matches it perfectly. Extracting tax from a gross of 27.5 with 10 entered as the rate gives 25 net and 2.5 tax, with nothing lost to rounding. The limit only bites when you genuinely need the third decimal.

Careful on the invoice

Do not copy the displayed figures straight onto an invoice in a three-decimal currency. Writing 13.58 instead of the figure rounded to the fils may disagree with your accounting system. If you use the Basic invoice generator, check how it displays the currency you choose, and do not treat any tool here as a certified invoicing system.

The rate of 10 in this article is an arithmetic example only, not a statement about any country's rate. Confirm the rate that applies to you with the tax authority.
