I ship US online orders to Dubai through a package forwarder that bills in pounds: how do I check its dimensional weight?

Enter the box in inches, the weight in pounds, and the divisor your forwarder states in its terms in cubic inches per pound. The calculator gives the volumetric and chargeable weight in pounds with kilograms alongside, so you know roughly what the forwarder will bill before you request shipping.

Why forwarder bills surprise people

When you order from a US store, the parcel lands at the forwarder's US warehouse, gets measured and weighed, and you are then offered a price to ship it on to Dubai or Riyadh. Big retailers sometimes put a small item in a box far larger than it needs, and you end up paying to fly air. Knowing the dimensional weight helps you decide whether to ask the forwarder to repack into a smaller box, if it offers that, or to consolidate several orders into one shipment.

A worked example in inches and pounds

A box arrives at the warehouse measuring 20 × 16 × 12 inches and weighing 10 lb. Its volume is 3840 in³. I ran it through the calculator with two divisors, both purely as examples:

  • With 139 (example): volumetric weight 27.63 lb, or 12.53 kg, which applies because the actual weight is only 10 lb.
  • With 166 (example): volumetric weight 23.13 lb, or 10.49 kg.
  • A smaller 14 × 10 × 6 inch box weighing 4 lb, with 139: chargeable weight 6.04 lb, or 2.74 kg.

So a parcel that reads 10 lb on the scale is billed as if it were close to 28 lb under the first example divisor. The right number for you is the one your forwarder prints on its pricing or terms page, so use that instead of these examples.

Steps

  1. In the Volumetric shipping-weight calculator, choose in as the dimension unit, then type the length, width and height shown on the forwarder's parcel page.
  2. Choose lb as the weight unit and enter the actual weight.
  3. Select the forwarder's divisor from the list if it is there, or type it in Divisor value and set the basis to in³ per lb.
  4. Read the chargeable weight in pounds with kilograms beside it, and use Copy result if you want to compare later.

What the tool leaves out here

A forwarder may round weight up to a whole or half pound under its own rules. The tool applies no rounding, so the invoice may show a slightly higher figure. It also knows nothing about the forwarder's prices or extra fees: it gives you the weight, and you take the price from their table. If you want to know whether buying from the US still saved you money after shipping, add the shipping cost to the item price and compare it with the local option in the Unit-price comparison tool.

Common questions

Do I need to convert inches to centimetres first?

No. Choose inches and enter the numbers as they are; the tool shows the volume in both units.

The forwarder shows pounds but I think in kilos. What do I do?

The result appears in both units, converted exactly: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg.

Does the tool know my forwarder's divisor?

No, it is not linked to any company. Take the number from their pricing page.
