My logo gets cut off at the edges in my WhatsApp Business profile picture. How do I fix it?
Profile pictures are shown inside a circle, so the corners of a square image disappear. 'Fit inside' on its own scales a wide logo until it touches both sides of the square, so its ends fall outside the circle. The fix takes two passes: first widen the canvas at the same height, which adds side margins without enlarging, then turn that into a square. Check how it looks after uploading.
Why the logo gets clipped
WhatsApp shows the profile picture cropped to a circle. A circle inside a square touches only the middle of each side and leaves the four corners outside. A wide logo, such as a store name set next to a symbol, usually runs to the edges of the image, so its corners land in the area that gets cut.
A 1600 × 900 logo inside a 640 × 640 square with 'Fit inside'.
The logo shrinks to 640 × 360 and is placed 140 px from the top, touching the left and right edges.
A corner of the logo sits about 367 px from the center, while the circle's radius is only 320, so the corners are clipped.
A bigger square does not help, because 'Fit inside' always scales the picture until it touches two edges. What you need is a real margin around the logo.
The fix: two passes
- Open the Image resizer, choose the logo and untick the ratio lock.
- First pass: keep the height as it is (900) and type a width larger than the logo's, such as 2000, with 'Fit inside' and a background matching your logo's backdrop. Since the height is unchanged, the logo keeps its original size with no enlarging, and a 200 px band appears on each side.
- Save this result as PNG so no detail is lost between passes, and download it.
- Second pass: choose the new file, type 640 × 640 with 'Fit inside' and the same color, then save as JPEG or PNG.
After the first pass: a 2000 × 900 file with the logo in the middle at its own 1600 × 900.
After the second pass: a 640 × 288 band placed 176 px from the top, with the logo inside it only 512 px wide.
A corner of the logo now sits about 294 px from the center, inside the circle of radius 320.
Tips before uploading
- If your logo has a square version or a symbol without the name, it is usually clearer in the small circle than the wide logo.
- The larger the width in the first pass, the wider the margin and the smaller the logo in the circle. Try two numbers and compare.
- 640 is only an example, and WhatsApp processes the picture its own way. What matters is a square with the logo kept clear of the corners.
Common questions
Can I do this in a single pass?
Not in this tool, because 'Fit inside' always makes the picture touch two edges. The two passes add a margin without any enlarging.
What if my logo file already has extra empty space?
Trim it first in the Image cropper so the numbers work out more precisely, then do the two passes.
