Do line breaks and hashtags count toward my Instagram caption length, and how do I check it before posting?

In the word counter every line break counts as one character, every hashtag counts as a word, and its letters and the # sign count as characters. So a caption split into short lines is longer than it looks. Paste the caption, read 'Characters (as read)' and 'Lines', then compare with the limit in Instagram's current guidance or what the app shows you when you post.

A short example in numbers

A three-line Arabic caption: «تشكيلة الصيف وصلت ☀️», then «اطلبوا الآن», then «#عروض #الرياض». Pasted into the Word and character counter, it gives:

  • 7 words: five in the first two lines and two from the hashtags.
  • 45 characters as read, including the two line breaks, the two # signs and the sun.
  • 38 characters without spaces, because line breaks are left out here along with spaces.
  • 46 code points, because the sun ☀️ is one character made of two points.
  • 3 lines, 3 sentences, and 1 paragraph, since no blank line separates them.

A longer, real caption

Real captions often have a blank line before the hashtags. We tried an Eid offer caption with two text lines, a blank line and four hashtags, plus ✨ and 👆. Result: 23 words, 152 characters as read, 4 lines of which 3 are non-empty, and 2 paragraphs. Note that the blank line itself added one more line break to the character count, without carrying a single word.

In the same example the UTF-16 count was 153, one more than characters as read, because of the emoji. The gap is small here but grows with more emoji, so watch it if you are close to the limit.

Which number to compare with the limit

The tool assumes no number for Instagram and no counting method, because platforms change their limits and may count their own way. The practical approach:

  1. Write the whole caption in a note or document, with lines, hashtags and emoji exactly as you will post it.
  2. Paste it into the counter and read characters as read and UTF-16 units together.
  3. Check the limit in Instagram's current guidance or in the app. If you are comfortably under it on both numbers, you are fine.
  4. If either number is close to the limit, shorten the text before posting, not after, so the caption is not cut or refused.

Trimming without losing the layout

  • Runs of blank lines use characters for nothing. One blank line is enough to separate; clean them all in one go with the Whitespace cleaner.
  • Hashtags count as words and characters. Pick the ones that matter rather than a long list of near-duplicates.
  • The space after each emoji or before each hashtag is a character too. Keep it where it helps reading, but do not double it.

Common questions

Does the counter count lines wrapped on a phone screen?

No. Lines are counted by the line breaks you typed, not by how the text wraps on screen.

Is a hashtag with an underscore one word?

Counting follows the Unicode rules in your browser. Paste that hashtag and look at the word count rather than assuming.
