Bytes to kilobytes

Type a value in bytes to see it in kilobytes straight away, or type in the second box to convert back.

Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Type the value in the bytes box.
  2. Read the result in kilobytes as you type, and pick the precision you need.
  3. Swap the direction to convert back, or copy the result.

How it is calculated

kB = B × 0.001

Multiply the value in bytes by 0.001 to get kilobytes.

Example

To convert 25 B to kilobytes: 25 × 0.001 = 0.025 kB.

About the units

Byte
A unit of storage equal to exactly 8 bits (an octet in IEC 80000-13), typically enough to store one Latin character.
Kilobyte
A decimal (SI prefix) unit equal to exactly 1000 bytes. Not the same as the binary kibibyte, which is 1024 bytes.

Limits and caveats

  • Results are rounded for display and computed with the browser's floating point precision (about 15 significant digits).
  • Both unit factors are exact by their official definitions.

Questions about this tool

How many kilobytes are in one byte?

1 B = 0.001 kB exactly.

How do I convert bytes to kilobytes?

Use kB = B × 0.001. For example, 25 B = 0.025 kB.

How many bytes are in one kilobyte?

1 kB = 1,000 B.

Why does a 1 TB drive show about 931 GB on my computer?

Drive makers count 1 TB as 10^12 bytes, while Windows divides by 2^30 and labels the result GB even though it is really GiB. So 10^12 ÷ 1,073,741,824 gives about 931.32, and no space is missing.

What is the difference between a kilobyte and a kibibyte?

A kilobyte (kB) is a decimal unit of 1000 bytes and a kibibyte (KiB) is a binary unit of 1024 bytes. The same split applies to mega and mebi, giga and gibi, and the gap grows at each step.
