How to use it

  1. Enter what do you want to find?, mass, volume and density.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

ρ = m ÷ V, m = ρ × V, V = m ÷ ρ. Conversions: 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³ and 1000 cm³ = 1 L.

Example

Inputs: What do you want to find? = Density, Mass = 500 g, Volume = 250 cm³, Density = 2 g/cm³. Result: Density: 2 g/cm³; In kg/m³: 2,000 kg/m³.

Limits and caveats

  • Density changes with temperature, especially for liquids and gases.
  • Assumes a uniform material; hollow or mixed objects give an average density.

Questions about this tool

How do I find the volume of an irregular object?

Drop it into a graduated cylinder of water; the rise in milliliters is its volume in cubic centimeters.

When does an object float in water?

When its average density is lower than that of water, which is about 1 g/cm³ for fresh water.

How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?

Multiply by 1000. Iron at about 7.87 g/cm³ is 7870 kg/m³.
