HEX to nearest CSS color name

Useful for naming colors in code or docs when you want a readable name instead of a code.

Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter hex color.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

The color and every named color are converted to CIELAB (D65 white), then the name with the smallest ΔE76 = √(ΔL² + Δa² + Δb²) wins.

Example

Inputs: HEX color = #FF6348. Result: Nearest name: tomato; Distance ΔE76: 0.51; Match: Approximate.

#FF6348
tomato

Limits and caveats

  • ΔE76 is a simple metric; below about 2.3 most people see no difference, but it is less accurate for saturated blues.
  • CSS has few names, so the nearest one can still be far from your color.

Questions about this tool

Why CIELAB instead of RGB distance?

Distance in Lab tracks how different two colors look to the eye much better than RGB distance.

What does aqua / cyan mean?

Both names share the value #00FFFF, so the tool lists every equivalent name.

When is the name an exact match?

When its code equals yours, giving a distance of 0. Otherwise it is the closest estimate.
