Kilobits to bits

Type a value in kilobits to see it in bits straight away, or type in the second box to convert back.

Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Type the value in the kilobits box.
  2. Read the result in bits as you type, and pick the precision you need.
  3. Swap the direction to convert back, or copy the result.

How it is calculated

bit = kbit × 1,000

Multiply the value in kilobits by 1,000 to get bits.

Example

To convert 25 kbit to bits: 25 × 1,000 = 25,000 bit.

About the units

Kilobit
A decimal unit equal to exactly 1000 bits, which is 125 bytes.
Bit
The smallest unit of digital information, holding one of two values, 0 or 1. Eight bits make exactly one byte.

Limits and caveats

  • Results are rounded for display and computed with the browser's floating point precision (about 15 significant digits).
  • Both unit factors are exact by their official definitions.

Questions about this tool

How many bits are in one kilobit?

1 kbit = 1,000 bit exactly.

How do I convert kilobits to bits?

Use bit = kbit × 1,000. For example, 25 kbit = 25,000 bit.

How many kilobits are in one bit?

1 bit = 0.001 kbit.

Why does a 1 TB drive show about 931 GB on my computer?

Drive makers count 1 TB as 10^12 bytes, while Windows divides by 2^30 and labels the result GB even though it is really GiB. So 10^12 ÷ 1,073,741,824 gives about 931.32, and no space is missing.

What is the difference between a kilobyte and a kibibyte?

A kilobyte (kB) is a decimal unit of 1000 bytes and a kibibyte (KiB) is a binary unit of 1024 bytes. The same split applies to mega and mebi, giga and gibi, and the gap grows at each step.
