How to use it
- Type the value in the megabytes box.
- Read the result in gigabits as you type, and pick the precision you need.
- Swap the direction to convert back, or copy the result.
How it is calculated
Gbit = MB × 0.008
Multiply the value in megabytes by 0.008 to get gigabits.
Example
To convert 25 MB to gigabits: 25 × 0.008 = 0.2 Gbit.
Conversion table
| Megabytes (MB) | Gigabits (Gbit) |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0.008 |
| 2 | 0.016 |
| 3 | 0.024 |
| 5 | 0.04 |
| 10 | 0.08 |
| 20 | 0.16 |
| 25 | 0.2 |
| 50 | 0.4 |
| 100 | 0.8 |
| 250 | 2 |
| 500 | 4 |
| 1,000 | 8 |
About the units
- Megabyte
- A decimal unit equal to exactly 1,000,000 bytes (10^6), different from the binary mebibyte of 1,048,576 bytes.
- Gigabit
- A decimal unit equal to exactly 10^9 bits, which is 125,000,000 bytes.
Limits and caveats
- Results are rounded for display and computed with the browser's floating point precision (about 15 significant digits).
- Both unit factors are exact by their official definitions.
Questions about this tool
How many gigabits are in one megabyte?
1 MB = 0.008 Gbit exactly.
How do I convert megabytes to gigabits?
Use Gbit = MB × 0.008. For example, 25 MB = 0.2 Gbit.
How many megabytes are in one gigabit?
1 Gbit = 125 MB.
Why does a 1 TB drive show about 931 GB on my computer?
Drive makers count 1 TB as 10^12 bytes, while Windows divides by 2^30 and labels the result GB even though it is really GiB. So 10^12 ÷ 1,073,741,824 gives about 931.32, and no space is missing.
What is the difference between a kilobyte and a kibibyte?
A kilobyte (kB) is a decimal unit of 1000 bytes and a kibibyte (KiB) is a binary unit of 1024 bytes. The same split applies to mega and mebi, giga and gibi, and the gap grows at each step.
