Drop = jacket size - trouser waist, both in inches. Standard ready-made suits use drop 6; larger is an athletic or slim cut, smaller is a fuller cut.
Example
Inputs: US jacket size = 42 in, Trouser waist = 34 in. Result: Drop: 8 in; Fit: Above standard: athletic or slim cut; Trouser waist at drop 6: 36 in.
Limits and caveats
- Drop 6 is standard in US and UK suits; some European brands use 7 or 8.
- A tailor can usually let out or take in trousers by about 1 to 2 in.
Questions about this tool
What does drop 6 mean on a suit?
The trouser waist is 6 in smaller than the jacket size, so a 40 jacket comes with 34 trousers.
My drop is 8, what should I do?
Look for athletic-fit suits or buy the jacket and trousers as separates.
Can I use EU sizes?
Work in inches; an EU jacket size becomes US by subtracting 10.
