How to use it
- Enter metal and thickness.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Every gauge in the chosen metal table is converted to mm (inches × 25.4) and the one closest to your thickness is chosen.
Example
Inputs: Metal = Steel (carbon), Thickness = 1.5 mm. Result: Nearest gauge: 16; Thickness of that gauge: 1.519 mm; Difference: 0.019 mm.
Limits and caveats
- If your thickness sits between two gauges, the nearest may be thinner than needed; check the difference before ordering.
- Tables are nominal and vary slightly between mills.
Questions about this tool
What gauge is 1.5 mm sheet?
In the steel table the nearest is 16 gauge at 1.519 mm.
What gauge is 2 mm aluminum?
The nearest is 12 gauge at 2.053 mm.
Why do I have to pick the metal?
Each metal has its own table, so 1 mm maps to different gauges for steel and aluminum.
