Percent yield calculator
Enter the product you actually got and the theoretical amount, in the same unit, to see how efficient the reaction was.

How to use it
- Enter actual yield and theoretical yield.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Percent yield = (actual yield ÷ theoretical yield) × 100.
Example
Inputs: Actual yield = 8.5, Theoretical yield = 10. Result: Percent yield: 85%; Shortfall from theoretical: 1.5.
Limits and caveats
- Both yields must be in the same unit, grams or moles.
- The theoretical yield comes from the limiting reagent; this tool does not work it out.
Questions about this tool
Why is yield usually below 100%?
Side reactions, incomplete reaction and product lost during filtering and transfer.
Should I use grams or moles?
Either, as long as actual and theoretical yields use the same unit.
What does a 110% yield mean?
Usually solvent, water or impurities remain in the product; dry it and weigh again.
