How it is calculated
Exact diameter from the AWG formula: 0.127 × 92^((36 − n) / 39) mm. The metric size is the closest of the common sizes 0.6, 0.8, 1, 1.2, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 mm.
Example
Inputs: Gauge = 16g. Result: Common metric size: 1.2 mm; Exact diameter (AWG): 1.291 mm; Diameter in inches: 0.0508 in.
Limits and caveats
- Shops round differently, so 2g may be sold as 6 or 6.5 mm and 00g as 9.5 or 10 mm.
- Gauge measures post thickness only, not ring diameter or bar length.
