Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter trim width, trim height, unit, bleed on each side, safe margin on each side and resolution.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

File size = trim size + 2 × bleed on each side. Safe area = trim size − 2 × safe margin. Pixels = (mm ÷ 25.4) × DPI, rounded.

Example

Inputs: Trim width = 85, Trim height = 55, Unit = Millimetres, Bleed on each side = 3, Safe margin on each side = 3. Result: File size with bleed: 91 × 61 mm; Width with bleed: 91 mm; Height with bleed: 61 mm.

Limits and caveats

  • A 3 mm (or 1/8 in) bleed and a 3 to 5 mm safe margin are common values, not one standard; check with your printer.
  • Does not add crop marks or the extra room some binding methods need.

Questions about this tool

What is bleed in printing?

Background and images extended past the trim line, cut off after printing so no white edge shows if the blade shifts a little.

What file size is an 85 × 55 mm business card with bleed?

With 3 mm bleed on each side it is 91 × 61 mm, about 1075 × 720 pixels at 300 DPI.

How does bleed differ from the safe area?

Bleed sits outside the trim line and is cut away, while the safe area sits inside it and holds text and logos so nothing gets clipped.
