Properties to YAML converter

Paste a properties file to get YAML arranged by levels, easier to read and shorter in large projects.

Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter properties text, turn numbers and true/false into typed values and indentation.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

The file is read with Java Properties.load rules, then every key is split at dots and [n] becomes a list item, checking that lists run from 0 without gaps. With typing, 8080 becomes a number and true a boolean, while 1.10 stays text because its form would change. YAML is then written with 2 or 4 space indentation.

Example

Inputs: Turn numbers and true/false into typed values = yes, Indentation = 2 spaces. Result: YAML: server: port: 8080 spring: application: name: demo datasource: url: jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/shop app: languages: - ar - en title: ToolSahla .

# Spring Boot
server.port=8080
spring.application.name=demo
spring.datasource.url=jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/shop
app.languages[0]=ar
app.languages[1]=en
app.title=ToolSahla
server:
  port: 8080
spring:
  application:
    name: demo
  datasource:
    url: jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/shop
app:
  languages:
    - ar
    - en
  title: ToolSahla

Limits and caveats

  • A key that is both a value and a group, such as a and a.b, cannot be written as YAML.
  • Comments are dropped, and for a repeated key the last value wins.

Questions about this tool

Why does it say a list is missing item 0?

The file has list[1] but no list[0]. Add the missing item or renumber from 0.

Will Spring Boot behave differently after converting?

No. The properties and values are the same, only the format changes.

Why is 1.10 still quoted?

It is not the canonical form of a number, so it stays text instead of becoming 1.1.
