How to use it
- Enter metal.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Thickness from the metal table × 25.4 mm. Weight (kg/m²) = thickness (mm) × density (g/cm³), using 7.85 for steel and galvanized, 7.93 for 304 stainless and 2.70 for aluminum.
Example
Inputs: Metal = Steel (carbon). Result: Gauge table: Steel (Manufacturers' Standard Gauge); Gauges listed: 28.
Limits and caveats
- Weight is approximate since density varies with alloy and zinc coating.
- The stainless table is the 1893 U.S. Standard Gauge; some mills use slightly different rounded values.
Questions about this tool
How much does a square meter of 16 gauge steel weigh?
About 11.92 kg, at 1.519 mm and 7.85 g/cm³.
What is the thinnest sheet in the chart?
Gauge 30, which is 0.305 mm for steel and 0.399 mm for galvanized.
Why does aluminum use the AWG table?
In the US, aluminum sheet is traditionally measured with the Brown & Sharpe gauge, which is the same as AWG for wire.
