Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter solute mass, solvent mass and final solution volume.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Density = (solute mass + solvent mass) ÷ volume; mass percent = solute mass ÷ total mass × 100; concentration (g/L) = solute mass ÷ volume in liters.

Example

Inputs: Solute mass = 10 g, Solvent mass = 100 g, Final solution volume = 102 mL. Result: Solution density: 1.078431 g/mL; Density in kg/m³: 1,078.431 kg/m³; Total mass: 110 g.

Limits and caveats

  • Measure the final volume after mixing, since volumes do not always add up.
  • Density changes with temperature, so note the temperature with the result.

Questions about this tool

Why not just add the water and solute volumes?

Solute particles fit between solvent molecules, so the final volume is often less than the sum.

Is g/mL the same as g/cm³?

Yes. One milliliter is exactly one cubic centimeter.

What is the density of pure water?

About 0.998 g/mL at 20 °C and about 1.000 g/mL at 4 °C.
