SWG to AWG converter: compare wire gauges

The same number means different diameters in the two systems, so the tool matches them by diameter.

Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter swg gauge.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

SWG diameter comes from the BS 3737 table (inches × 25.4); AWG diameter = 0.127 × 92^((36 − n) / 39) mm. The AWG with the closest diameter is chosen.

Example

Inputs: SWG gauge = 16. Result: Nearest AWG: 14; SWG diameter: 1.6256 mm; AWG diameter: 1.6277 mm.

Limits and caveats

  • The range is 4/0 to 44 SWG so it stays inside AWG 0000 to 40.
  • Matching is by diameter only; insulation and current specs differ between countries.

Questions about this tool

Is 16 SWG the same as 16 AWG?

No. 16 SWG is 1.626 mm, close to 14 AWG, while 16 AWG is 1.291 mm.

Which is thicker at the same number?

For most common numbers, SWG wire is thicker than AWG wire of the same number.

Why is the percent difference shown?

It shows how close the match is; under 3% is usually fine for craft wire and light springs.
