How to use it

  1. Enter annual yield (apy) and compounding frequency.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

APR = n × ((1 + APY)^(1/n) − 1), and with continuous compounding APR = ln(1 + APY). Rate per period = APR / n.

Example

Inputs: Annual yield (APY) = 5 %, Compounding frequency = Monthly. Result: APR: 4.8889%; Rate per period: 0.407412%.

Limits and caveats

  • Assumes a fixed rate through the year.
  • Does not add fees that some lending rules fold into APR.

Questions about this tool

Why is APR lower than APY?

APY includes interest on interest, so the matching nominal rate is smaller, more so with frequent compounding.

How do I get the monthly rate?

Choose monthly compounding; the second result shows the rate per month.

Are APY and EAR the same?

In practice yes. Both are the effective annual rate after compounding.
