How to use it
- Enter loan amount, annual interest rate, repayment term and upfront fee.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n). Fee = P × fee %. Effective APR is the monthly rate that makes the payments worth the net amount (P − fee), times 12.
Example
Inputs: Loan amount = 50,000, Annual interest rate = 7 %, Repayment term = 36 months, Upfront fee = 1 %. Result: Monthly payment: 1,543.85; Total interest: 5,578.77; Fee amount: 500.00.
Limits and caveats
- Assumes the fee is taken out of the loan at payout and the quoted rate is on the declining balance.
- If the lender quotes a flat rate, convert it to APR first with the flat rate to APR converter.
Questions about this tool
Why is the effective APR higher than the quoted rate?
You repay a loan priced on the full amount while receiving less after the fee.
Is the fee added to the payment?
No, here the fee comes out of the amount once and does not change the payment.
How do I compare two personal loan offers?
Compare the effective APR and total cost, not the quoted rate alone, or use the loan comparison calculator.
