How it is calculated

From 1 to 10 the ordinal is a participle form: الأول, الثاني, العاشر. In 11, 21 and similar numbers الحادي replaces الأول. From 11 to 19 both parts agree with the noun: الثالث عشر and الثالثة عشرة. Tens such as العشرون do not change.

Example

Inputs: Number = 21, Gender = Masculine. Result: Ordinal: الحادي والعشرون; Feminine form: الحادية والعشرون.

Limits and caveats

  • Covers 1 to 100 in the definite form with ال.
  • Forms are nominative; endings of words such as الثاني can change with case in a sentence.

Questions about this tool

When is it الحادي and when الأول?

الأول is used for 1 on its own; الحادي is used in compounds such as الحادي عشر and الحادي والعشرون.

How do I write 12th for a feminine noun?

Write الثانية عشرة: both parts are feminine, as in الدورة الثانية عشرة.

Does العشرون change for feminine nouns?

No. The tens stay the same, so it is الفصل العشرون and الدورة العشرون.
