Which pack is really cheaper?
One supplier offers a 500 g pack at one price, another offers a 1.2 kg pack at another. The lower price on the shelf does not make a pack cheaper. The right comparison is the price per kilo, not the price per pack.
Turn everything into one unit
The idea is simple: divide each pack's price by its quantity after converting it to the same unit. Then you are comparing like with like, such as the price per kilo, per 100 grams or per piece.
A 500 g pack for 12.00: price per kilo = 12 ÷ 0.5 = 24.00.
A 1.2 kg pack for 26.40: price per kilo = 26.40 ÷ 1.2 = 22.00.
The second pack is the better value, and the first costs (24 − 22) ÷ 22 × 100 = 9.09% more.
Notice the first pack is 14.40 cheaper on the shelf, yet more expensive per kilo. That gap multiplies when you buy in bulk for your store.
How to do it
- Open the Unit-price comparison tool and type a name for each option and its pack price.
- Enter the quantity and pick its unit: grams, kilos, ml, litres, pieces and more.
- Add up to 6 options.
- Choose the display base, such as per kilo or per 100 g, and read the table: the best value is labelled, and every other option shows how much more it costs.
When the comparison is not enough
- The tool compares price per unit only, and does not consider quality, concentration or expiry dates.
- A bigger pack is only cheaper if you will use it before it expires.
- Grams cannot be compared with litres, because converting needs the product's density. The tool explains this instead of giving you a wrong number.
- Fluid ounces and gallons are US measures, and imperial UK measures are not supported.
If a pack is on offer, work out the price after the discount first with the Discount calculator, then compare. Once you know your real cost, price your product with the Selling-price calculator.
Common questions
Can I compare packs by the piece?
Yes. Pick the piece unit for every option and you get the price of a single piece.
What if the unit prices are equal?
The tool shows the options as tied, and the decision comes down to quality or the size that suits you.
Are the prices saved?
No, the calculation runs inside your browser.
