An imported supplement on Amazon is sold in ounces and a local one in kilograms: how do I compare them per kilo?

Enter the import by its net weight in ounces as printed, and the local pack in kilograms. Ounces and pounds are mass units, so the tool converts them exactly (1 oz = 28.349523125 g) and shows the price per kg or per 100 g for both. Just make sure both prices are in the same currency, and that the import's price includes shipping if you will pay it.

Example: protein powder

An imported tub with a net weight of 16 oz at 45 dirhams, after converting the price and adding delivery, against a local 1 kg tub at 60 dirhams:

  • The import: 99.208 per kg, or 9.9208 per 100 g.
  • The local tub: 60 per kg, or 6 per 100 g, and it is the Best value.
  • The import is 65.35% more expensive per kilo.

On the product page 45 looks lower than 60, but 16 oz is only about 454 g, less than half a kilo. It is an easy trap to fall into with US products: the weight figure looks big because the unit is small.

Steps

  1. In the Unit-price comparison tool, enter the import: its price, 16 as the quantity, and oz (ounce, mass) as the unit.
  2. Enter the local tub: 60, then 1, with kg (kilogram).
  3. Under Show cost choose per kg or per 100 g. Neither the percentage nor the ranking changes.
  4. If the weight is printed in pounds, such as 2 lb, choose lb (pound) directly instead of converting it yourself.

Check these three before trusting the result

  • Weight ounces, not fluid ounces: powders and capsules are labelled in weight ounces (oz or Net Wt), while fluid ounces (fl oz) are for liquids and sit in the volume group in the tool.
  • Currency: the tool does not convert currencies. Convert the dollar price at the rate you will actually pay, then enter it. The currency list in the tool is for display only.
  • Shipping and fees: if the local product reaches you free and the import does not, add the shipping to the import's price before entering it.

What about supplements of different strength?

The tool compares price per weight only. If one powder has more protein per serving, a per-kilo comparison is not enough. You can instead compare the number of servings printed on each tub using the piece unit, to get the price per serving, as long as the servings are comparable. If the import has a coupon, work out the price after it with the Discount calculator.

Common questions

Is 16 oz the same as a pound?

Yes, 16 weight ounces = 1 lb = 453.59237 g, and the tool gives the same result either way.

Can I show the cost per pound?

Yes, per lb and per oz are display options for the mass group.

The tub shows both grams and ounces. Which do I use?

Either; the result is practically the same. Grams are easier if they are printed clearly.
