The tool says it found more marks than it removed and that some were kept; why?

Because the tool counts every diacritic in your text but only deletes the marks in the groups you turned on. Three groups are off by default: other combining marks, the superscript alef and the Quranic annotation signs. Their marks are included in «Marks found» and stay in the text, and a note under the counters says how many. Turn the group on if you really want them gone.

How to read the counters

Under the result there are three numbers: «Marks removed», «Marks found» and «Arabic letters». Next to each group in the group list, a small number shows how many marks were removed from that group alone. When «found» is bigger than «removed», the difference is marks that belong to a group that is off, and the tool says so outright: «Marks kept because their group is off», with the count.

Example: the هٰذا that did not change as expected

The text: «هَٰذَا الكِتَابُ». With the default groups the result was «هٰذا الكتاب». The tool removed 5 harakat, found 6 marks, and kept one: the small alef above the ha in «هٰذا». The superscript alef group's counter reads zero, since it removed nothing, and the kept-marks note reads 1.

Another example with two of the same: «لَٰكِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ» became «لٰكن هٰؤلاء». Eight marks were removed (7 harakat and one shadda) and two superscript alefs were kept.

Why the superscript alef is off by default

It is not an optional vowel like the fatha; it is part of how certain words are spelled in vocalized text: هٰذا, لٰكن, الرحمٰن. Removing it gives «هذا» and «لكن», the way those words are normally written without marks, which is usually what you want in product copy or a message. But it changes Quranic text and fully vocalized text, so the tool leaves the decision to you.

The other two groups are off for similar reasons. «Other combining marks» can include a hamza typed as a separate mark, so removing it changes spelling. «Quranic annotation and pause signs» contains visible signs such as the end of an ayah.

What to do

  1. Read the kept-marks note under the counters to see how many there are.
  2. Look in the result for words that still carry a mark. A superscript alef shows as a small alef above the letter.
  3. If the text is ordinary, like a product description or a post, turn on «Superscript (dagger) alef» in the Arabic diacritic remover: the first example then becomes «هذا الكتاب» and the numbers match.
  4. If the text is Quranic or vocalized for teaching, leave the group off. The kept mark is part of the word there.

Another note you may see: tatweel

If a note about «Tatweel characters» appears, those are not diacritics and are not part of «Marks found». The tool counts and reports them only, and no group removes them. Use the tatweel remover for that.

Common questions

Does a zero on a group's counter mean it is broken?

No. It means nothing was removed from it, either because it is off or because the text has no marks from that group.

A message says there are no diacritics for the selected groups, but my text is vocalized?

That happens when all the marks in the text belong to groups that are off. Turn on the right group, or check that the text really contains vowel marks.
