What is the difference between flipping an image vertically and rotating it 180 degrees?
Both put the top of the photo at the bottom, but in different ways. A 180 degree turn spins the photo like a sheet of paper on a desk, so text stays intact and you only need to tilt your head to read it. A vertical flip mirrors it like a reflection in water: right stays right, but the text becomes mirror writing that will not read however you turn it.
A simple test that shows the difference
Picture a photo of a jar labeled 'Sidr Honey' with the logo in the top right.
- After a 180 degree turn: the logo is bottom left and the text is upside down. Turn your phone round and it reads normally.
- After a vertical flip: the logo is bottom right and the text is mirrored. Turn your phone round and it still reads backwards, as in a mirror.
- After a horizontal flip: the logo is top left, and the text is mirrored too, but still at the top.
The equation that explains everything
A 180 degree turn is exactly a horizontal flip plus a vertical flip. That is why, if you tick both flips and turn 180 degrees at the same time, each change undoes the other and the photo is back where it started. The tool detects this, shows 'Nothing has changed yet' and keeps the download disabled, so you do not save a copy identical to the original at a lower quality.
180 degrees with both horizontal and vertical flips: no change, download disabled.
180 degrees on its own: a real change, the photo upside down.
Both flips with no rotation: the same result as a 180 degree turn on its own.
When you need which
- A photo that came out upside down because the phone was held upside down: rotate 180. That is the right fix in most cases.
- A deliberate reflection, such as a product design on a mirrored surface or an artistic effect: flip vertically.
- Backwards text from the front camera: flip horizontally, not vertically, and not a rotation.
Steps in the tool
- Open the Image rotator and flipper tool and choose the photo.
- To rotate, press 'Rotate 180°'. To flip vertically, tick 'Flip vertically (top/bottom)'.
- Read any text in the preview to confirm you picked the right one.
- Download. The dimensions do not change either way: a 1600 × 1200 photo stays 1600 × 1200.
In both cases no pixels are recalculated and the photo does not get softer; both simply move the pixels as they are. The only quality difference comes from the save format: PNG is lossless, JPEG and WebP are saved at quality 92.
Common questions
Why did the download button suddenly turn off?
Most likely your settings cancelled each other out, such as 180 degrees plus both flips. Change one and the button comes back.
In what order are a flip and a rotation applied?
The flip first, then the rotation. The preview shows the final result.
Can I flip a photo diagonally?
There is no button for it, but a horizontal flip plus a 90 degree turn gives a diagonal flip.
