Which currency and tax setting should I use to invoice a client in the US?

Choose the currency you agreed with the client, usually USD, and type the prices in that currency, because the tool does not convert between currencies. If you do not charge tax on this work, leave the tax field empty and the invoice will have no tax row at all.

Currency: what you pick is what prints

The currency list in the Basic invoice generator includes riyals, dirhams, dollars, euros, pounds sterling and more. Pick USD and the code is printed beside every total, while the numbers stay exactly as you typed them. There is no exchange rate and no hidden conversion, so if the deal is in dollars, enter dollar prices, not riyals.

A practical tip: state the currency on the quote too, before any work starts. If you build the quote in the Quotation generator in the same currency, the invoice will not surprise anyone.

Example: app design for a US startup

A Riyadh UI designer agreed an app design with a Texas company for 1,800 dollars, plus six hours of extra revisions at 75 dollars an hour. She left the tax rate blank.

Worked example

App interface design: 1 x 1,800.00 = 1,800.00

Extra revisions: 6 x 75.00 = 450.00

Subtotal: 2,250.00 USD

Total: 2,250.00 USD

The summary has no tax row because the field is empty. Type 0 instead and a 'Tax (0%)' row showing zero appears, which a reader may take as a statement about your tax status. An empty field is cleaner when no tax is charged.

Does tax apply to work for a client abroad?

Neither the tool nor this article can answer that. How services for overseas clients are treated is set by the rules where you are based, and may depend on the kind of service, where it is used and whether you are registered. Ask your accountant, then enter the rate they give you, or leave the field empty.

Details that help an overseas client

  • Set the document language to English, or bilingual if you also want the Arabic labels.
  • In the payment details give the full international transfer information your bank asks for, including the SWIFT code where there is one.
  • Say who pays transfer fees, since a client may send 2,250 and less may arrive after charges.
  • Dates print as year, month, day, such as 2026-09-21, so a reader used to month-first dates cannot misread them.
