Is it safe to load my company bank statement into an online expense summary tool?

Your data does not go anywhere. When you choose a CSV file, your browser reads it from your device, works out the totals and builds the CSV or PDF for download, all inside the page, and the file's contents are never sent to a server. The flip side is that nothing is kept: close the page and the data is gone, so download the summary first.

What happens, step by step

  1. You choose the file or drop it on the import area. The browser reads the bytes from your device, and the Expense summary generator tool checks they are UTF-8.
  2. The papaparse library reads the rows and columns inside the page and maps the columns to fields.
  3. The totals per currency, month and category are worked out in the browser's memory.
  4. When you download, the CSV or PDF is built in the same page and saved straight to your device.

At no point is the file or its figures sent to the site's server or to anyone else. The only things fetched from the internet are the tool's own code, such as the CSV reader, the PDF builder and the Arabic font: program files coming down to your browser, not data going up from it.

How to check it yourself

You do not have to take this on trust. Open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, then import a test file. You will see code files load on first use, and no request carrying your file's contents. Try it first with a made-up file of two or three rows before you use a real statement.

What stays your responsibility

  • The device itself: the original file and the downloaded summary stay in your downloads folder. On a shared computer, delete them afterwards.
  • What you put in the file: the tool needs date, amount and currency, with category and note optional. Strip account numbers, IBANs and personal names from the statement if you do not need them; the summary gains nothing from them.
  • Sharing: the PDF you send to an accountant or partner carries your categories and totals, so check it before sending.

The flip side: no saving, no history

Because the tool sends nothing, it keeps nothing either. No account, no history of past files, no memory of the exchange rates you typed. If you close the tab or refresh before downloading, you import the file again. Make downloading the summary your last step before closing, and file it with that month's records.

Common questions

Is the tool a safe place to keep my accounts?

It is a summariser, not accounting software, and it stores no data. Your permanent records belong in your own files or accounting system.

Can I use it offline?

The page needs a connection to load its code. The calculation itself does not send your data over that connection.
