Is it safe to turn photos of my passport and residence ID into a PDF on a website?
With our tool the PDF is built entirely inside your browser: the photos are read and embedded on your device and are not uploaded to any server. That removes the biggest worry. What remains sits on your own device and in how you send the file, which is what this article covers.
What happens to your photos in this tool
When you pick your ID photo in Images to PDF, the browser reads it from your device, a PDF library running inside the page builds the pages, and a download button appears. There is no upload step, no account, and no copy kept on our side. You can check it yourself: build a test file from an ordinary picture so every part of the tool has loaded, then disconnect from the internet, add your photos and build again; the conversion still works.
That differs from many sites that upload your pictures to their server, convert them there and send a file back. In that case your passport photo sits on someone else's machine, even if only for minutes, under their deletion and retention policy.
What stays your responsibility
- The downloaded file lands in your Downloads folder. On a shared office or cafe computer, delete it after sending and empty the recycle bin.
- Your phone gallery may copy the original ID photos to a cloud backup automatically. Review your backup settings if that concerns you.
- JPEG photos enter the PDF as they are, together with any data they carry, such as the shooting location and phone model. Inspect and strip it with Image metadata inspector and remover before converting if that matters to you.
- Send the file through the channel the requester asked for, such as their official portal, not a group chat or the email of someone you do not know.
Practical steps for a clean ID file
- Photograph the card on a dark surface in good light, without a flash bouncing off the glossy layer.
- If both sides are required, shoot the front then the back and keep them in that order in the list.
- Choose A4, Fit inside and a small margin so the whole card shows and no number or expiry date is cut off.
- Build the PDF and check the preview to make sure every number is legible.
- Give the file a clear name, then delete the copies you no longer need once it is sent.
What the tool cannot promise
The tool does not password protect the file, does not add a watermark by itself, and has no control over what happens to the PDF once it leaves your device. To limit misuse of an ID copy, some people add a line such as for account opening with a named company only using a watermark tool, but ask the recipient first whether they accept that, because some organisations reject altered documents.
Common questions
Does the site keep a copy of my file?
No. The file is built and stays in your browser until you download it or close the page.
Is it just as safe on a phone?
Yes, the same processing happens inside your phone's browser. Just watch where the file is saved after download.
Can I put a password on the PDF?
No, this tool does not add passwords. If the recipient wants a protected file you will need other software.
