My technical bid is confidential; is it safe to number its pages with an online tool?
With this tool, yes: numbering runs inside your browser on your own device, so the bid is never uploaded to a server, and you get a new numbered copy while the original stays as it is. The risk that deserves your attention is not privacy but signatures: if the bid is already digitally signed, saving it again after numbering invalidates the signature, so number before you sign.
Two separate questions: where does the file go, and what happens to it?
When you are wary of 'an online tool' you usually mean two things. First, will a copy of your bid end up with someone else? Second, will anything in the file change that you did not ask for? A technical bid holds pricing, methodology and team names, and a leak before envelopes are opened could cost you the tender, so both questions are fair.
Where the file goes
PDF page numbering reads the file from your device inside the browser page, draws the numbers and builds the new file right there, then offers a download button. There is no upload step, no account and no share link. The numbered file is created on your machine and saved to your downloads folder like any other file.
Privacy is not only about the tool, though. On a shared office computer, remember the numbered copy sits in the downloads folder until you move or delete it.
What happens to the file
- The original is not modified. The tool works on a copy in memory, and the output is a new file whose name ends in numbered.
- Only the numbers are added. Pages outside the range you set are not touched at all, and existing content is neither removed nor reordered.
- Password-protected or encrypted files are refused, and the tool makes no attempt to get past the protection. If your bid is protected, number it before adding the password.
The real risk: digital signatures
Many buyers ask for a digitally signed bid. A digital signature protects the file exactly as it was at the moment of signing, and any new save, even one that only adds a small number in a corner, makes the verifying software report that the file changed after signing. That is not a flaw in the tool; it is the whole point of a signature.
- Finish the content, merging and page order.
- Number the pages and check the preview.
- Sign the numbered file.
- Send the signed copy, and do not open it in any editing tool afterwards.
Common questions
Do I need to create an account?
No. You open the tool and choose the file straight away.
What if I already numbered a signed file by mistake?
The signed original on your device has not changed, so send that. The numbered copy needs a fresh signature from the signer.
