Is my confidential document uploaded to a server when I add a watermark to it?
No. The watermark tool reads the file from your device, draws the mark and builds the new file inside the browser page itself, then gives you a download button. The file is not sent to any server, and the original on your device is left unchanged. If the document is password-protected, the tool refuses it rather than trying to get around the protection.
Why this matters for confidential documents
Stamping 'Confidential' on pages usually means the content itself is sensitive: a payroll sheet, a supplier contract, purchase prices you would rather competitors never saw. It makes little sense to upload a file like that to a server you know nothing about just to write on it that it is confidential. So 'where does the processing happen?' is the first question to ask of any tool.
What happens, step by step
- You pick the file from your device. The browser reads it into memory, the same way it reads a photo you open.
- The tool checks it is a valid PDF within the tested limits, up to 100 MB and 500 pages, and that it is not encrypted.
- When you press Add watermark, the mark is drawn on the selected pages and a new file is built, all inside the page.
- A preview and a download button appear. The new file is saved to your downloads folder with a name ending in watermarked.
At no step is there an upload, an account or a share link. When you close the page, the copy held in the browser's memory is gone.
Password-protected files
If your document is encrypted or password-protected, the tool refuses it with a clear message and makes no attempt to open it or bypass the protection. That is deliberate: a tool that sidesteps file protection is not one you should trust with your documents. If you own the file and know the password, remove the protection in the program that set it, add the mark, then protect it again if you wish.
What stays your responsibility
- The device: on a shared office computer, the stamped copy sits in the downloads folder until you move or delete it.
- How you send it: a watermark does not encrypt the file. If it goes by email or WhatsApp, anyone who receives it can open it.
- What a mark can do: it is a visual label on top of the page, and anyone with PDF editing software can remove it. It states the document's status; it does not stop copying or printing.
All of this applies to PDF watermark whether you use a text mark or an image, since a logo you upload is read from your device in the same way.
Common questions
Do I need an internet connection during processing?
You need it to open the tool page and load the font; the processing of your file itself happens on your device.
Does the tool keep a copy of my file or logo?
No. The file and the logo are read into the browser's memory only and are not sent anywhere.
