How do I make my Canva design background the exact color of the product in my photo?

Open the product photo in the color picker, click a well lit part that represents the product's color, copy the HEX code and paste it into the code box of Canva's color picker. If you will put text on that background, check its readability with the contrast checker before you post.

Why these posts look better

When a post's background is taken from the product itself, the photo looks like part of the design instead of pasted on top. A caramel leather bag on a caramel background, a blue perfume box on a matching blue: that harmony comes from the number, not from guessing on a color wheel.

Picking the right point on the product

A product in a photo is never one color: it has a lit side, a shaded side and a highlight. Take a leather bag: a click on a moderately lit panel gave #C49A6C, rgb(196, 154, 108) and hsl(31, 43%, 60%). That is the color your eye means when it calls the bag 'caramel'. Clicking the white glint or the shadow under the handle would give you a color that does not represent the product.

  • Choose a flat area of the product, away from edges, highlights and deep shadows.
  • Click two or three points in that area and compare the values in the history.
  • If you want a calmer background than the product, click a slightly lighter part of it rather than inventing a new color.

From the photo to Canva

  1. Open the product photo in the Image color picker and click the point you chose.
  2. Copy the HEX value, such as #C49A6C.
  3. In Canva, select the design background or the shape you want to color and open its color picker.
  4. Type or paste the code into the code box, and the background takes on that exact color.
  5. Place the product photo on the background and compare by eye. If the difference is obvious, try another point on the product.

Text on the new background

This is where many posts go wrong: caramel #C49A6C makes a lovely background, but white text on it is hard to read. The Color contrast checker puts white on this color at 2.57 to 1, which fails even the large-text test. Black text reaches 8.19 to 1. So if your post carries a price or an offer, write it in black or a very dark color on this background and save white for dark backgrounds.

Limits worth knowing

  • The picker reads the photo's color as the browser decodes it, in sRGB. Canva shows colors on screen too, so the on-screen match is good, but print is another story.
  • The product's color in the photo follows the lighting you shot it in. Shoot under a yellow bulb and your background carries that yellow cast too, which can be fine since the photo does as well.

Common questions

Should I use RGB or HSL in Canva?

Canva's code box takes HEX, which is the easiest format. The other values are useful in apps that accept them.

I want several product colors for several posts. How?

Click them one after another so they collect in the history, then copy all the values at once.

Does the tool work on a photo straight from my phone?

Yes. Open the page in your phone's browser, choose the photo from your gallery, touch the point you want and watch the magnifier.
