How to merge PDF files into one

An invoice in one file, an ID scan in a second and a contract in a third, and the office you are sending them to wants a single file. It is one of the most common requests, and it takes about a minute.

How to do it

  1. Open the Merge PDFs tool and choose two or more files from your device.
  2. You will see each file name and its page count. Put them in order by dragging or with the move buttons.
  3. Press merge and download the new file.

Order is the step that matters most. The tool copies each file's pages as they are, one file after another, in the order shown in the list.

Worked example

A first file with 3 pages and a second with 2 pages.

Result: one file with 5 pages, the first file's pages followed by the second's.

Swap the two files in the list and the result starts with the second file's two pages.

Your files stay on your device

Many merge sites upload your files to their servers. Here the merge happens inside your browser, which matters when the files are contracts, bank statements or ID scans.

What to know before merging

  • Tested limits: up to 20 files, 100 MB and 500 pages per file, and 2000 pages in the merged file.
  • Password-protected files are refused. The tool does not bypass any protection.
  • Bookmarks and interactive form fields are not carried into the merged file.
  • If one of the files is digitally signed, the signature will not be valid after merging. The tool warns you when it detects one.
  • The tool does not compress the result, so it is close to the combined size of the inputs.

To change the order of pages inside the merged file, not just the order of files, use Reorder PDF pages. For the opposite, taking specific pages out of a large file, use Split PDF. And if you have photos of documents from your phone, turn them into a PDF first with Images to PDF and then merge.

Common questions

Is merging really free?

Yes. Free, no sign-up and no watermark on your file.

Can I merge on my phone?

Yes, it works in a mobile browser. Very large files can be slower on phones with little memory.

Why was my file refused?

Most likely it is password-protected or encrypted. If it is your file, remove the protection in your usual program and try again.
