Why did my watermark print question marks where I typed an emoji?
Because the mark is drawn with IBM Plex Sans Arabic, embedded in the file, which covers Arabic and Latin letters, digits and a set of symbols but no emoji. Every character the font lacks is replaced with a question mark rather than silently dropped, and the tool shows a warning with the count. The fix is to put the idea into words, or use an image if you really need a symbol.
Why emoji do not show like on your phone
Your phone shows emoji because it has an emoji font installed in the system. A PDF does not borrow fonts from the reader's device; it carries its own, so it looks the same everywhere. The tool embeds one font for the mark, designed for Arabic and Latin, so any character outside that range has no shape to draw.
The tool could have dropped those characters silently, but then your mark might come out incomplete without you noticing. So it swaps each one for a question mark and reports the count in a message under the result, and you know straight away that something was not drawn as typed.
What we actually tested against the font
- 'Special offer 🔥': the words appear, and the fire becomes one question mark.
- A Saudi flag before 'Made in KSA': a flag is built from two hidden characters, so it becomes two question marks and the tool reports 2 replaced.
- A thumbs-up with a skin tone: also two, one for the thumb and one for the tone.
- Symbols that work fine: ©, ™ and the arrow →, plus accented Latin letters such as é.
- Symbols that do not: the star ★, the tick ✔, and Chinese characters.
Practical alternatives
- Say it in words: 'Exclusive offer' instead of the fire, 'Made in Saudi Arabia' instead of the flag. Words read more clearly in a watermark anyway.
- If the symbol is part of your brand, save it as a PNG with a transparent background and choose Image instead of Text in PDF watermark. An image is drawn as it is, with no font involved.
- If you want text and symbol together, run the tool twice: once with the text, then on the resulting file with the image placed nearby.
Do not ignore the warning
The message 'Characters the font cannot draw, replaced by ?' only appears when a replacement happened. If you see it and did not type an emoji, look for a symbol pasted from somewhere else, such as a star from a website or a tick from a spreadsheet. Pasted text can carry symbols you do not notice. Invisible characters, such as direction marks, are removed without being counted, since they never show anyway.
Common questions
Is the single-character riyal sign supported?
The older combined sign ﷼ showed up fine in our test. If you are unsure about a symbol, type SAR or riyal, which always work.
Does the same happen with page numbering?
Yes. The page numbering tool uses the same font, so unsupported symbols are replaced there in the same way.
