How to convert PNG to JPG without surprises
You converted your logo from PNG to JPG and a black or white background appeared out of nowhere? That is not a bug, it is how JPG works. Here is what happens and how to pick the right format.
The three formats in brief
- JPG (or JPEG): great for photos and small in size, but it never supports transparency.
- PNG: loses no detail and supports transparency, but photos saved as PNG are large.
- WebP: small files with transparency, accepted by most modern browsers and platforms.
Why the transparent background gets colored
JPG has no idea what “transparent” means. Every pixel must have a color. So when you convert, transparent areas are filled with a color, and the tool lets you choose that color instead of forcing black on you.
A 200 × 200 pixel PNG logo with a transparent background.
Converted to JPG with a white background: a real JPG file, same size, with a white background.
Converted to WebP: the background stays transparent.
Note that once transparency becomes a color in a JPG, it cannot be recovered from that file. Always keep your original PNG.
How to do it
- Open the Image format converter and choose one or more images.
- Pick the target format: JPEG, PNG or WebP.
- For JPEG and WebP set the quality, and for JPEG choose the background color for transparent areas.
- Download the converted files.
A real conversion, not a renamed file
Some sites rename photo.png to photo.jpg and leave the contents untouched, and some platforms then fail to read it. This tool actually re-encodes the image, then checks the signature of the output file before offering it for download.
And if you ask to convert an image into the format it is already in, such as PNG to PNG, the tool leaves it unconverted and tells you so, because re-encoding it would gain nothing.
Which format for your store?
For ordinary product photos: JPG or WebP. For logos, icons and cut-out images with no background: WebP or PNG. If size matters, compress the image after converting with the Image compressor.
Common questions
Can I get quality back by converting JPG to PNG?
No. Converting to PNG loses nothing more, but it cannot bring back what an earlier JPG already lost, and the file usually gets bigger.
Does it support HEIC?
No. Supported formats are JPEG, PNG and WebP. HEIC, GIF, TIFF and SVG are not supported.
Is location data removed?
Yes. EXIF data such as location and camera model is removed because the image is redrawn.
