Can I rotate an image and convert it from PNG to JPG in the same step?
Yes. After rotating, pick JPEG under 'Save as' instead of 'Original format', and the file downloads as a rotated JPEG in one go. Two things to know: any transparent area in the PNG is filled with the background color you set, and quality is fixed at 92 with no option to change it. If you want to convert without rotating, the format converter is the right place.
What happens when you choose JPEG
- 'Original format' means a PNG comes out as a PNG. Choosing JPEG changes only the output format, with no effect on the rotation.
- JPEG cannot store transparency, so the 'Transparent background' option is disabled and the tool fills transparent areas and empty corners with the background color, white by default.
- If the image really has transparency, a note tells you the transparent areas will be filled with the selected color, so the result does not surprise you.
- The save is at quality 92, a high setting but still lossy compression, and for photographs the file is usually much smaller than the PNG.
A worked scenario
A screenshot of a product photo from your supplier's catalogue, saved as PNG and lying on its side, that you want upright and in JPEG to upload to your Shopify or Salla store:
- Open the Image rotator and flipper tool and choose the screenshot.
- Press 'Rotate 90° right' or 'Rotate 90° left' until the photo stands upright.
- Under 'Save as', choose JPEG.
- If the transparency note appears, pick a background color that suits your product page, such as white.
- Check that the 'Output:' line shows the dimensions and JPEG, then download.
When to use the converter instead
The rotate tool requires an actual change of orientation: with no rotation and no flip, the download stays disabled and it tells you nothing has changed yet. So it is not a general format converter. Use the Image format converter when:
- You only want to convert, with no rotation.
- You want to set the quality yourself instead of the fixed 92.
- You have many images: the rotate tool handles one at a time, while the converter takes up to 30 together.
JPEG or WebP?
The tool also offers WebP under 'Save as', which keeps transparency at a small size. If your platform accepts WebP and your image has transparency you want to keep, it beats JPEG. If you are not sure what your platform accepts, JPEG is the safer bet.
Common questions
Can I convert JPEG to PNG the same way?
Yes, choose PNG under 'Save as'. Detail the JPEG already lost will not come back, but nothing further is lost.
Does converting change the image dimensions?
No. Dimensions are set by the rotation only; converting changes how the file is stored.
Can the empty corners be transparent in a JPEG?
No, JPEG has no transparency. Choose PNG or WebP if you want them clear.
