My product title has Arabic diacritics; will they end up in the URL?
No. The slug generator removes Arabic diacritics, meaning the short vowel marks, tanween, shadda and sukun, and removes the tatweel stretching character too, in both Arabic and Latin mode, before it builds the slug. A vocalized title and a plain one give the same slug, and the encoded URL does not grow with marks nobody sees. The title on your page can keep its diacritics.
The example: marked and unmarked
A fully vocalized product title:
عَسَلُ سِدْرٍ جَبَلِيّ
In Arabic mode the slug is:
عسل-سدر-جبلي
That is 12 characters and 62 encoded, exactly the same as the unmarked title عسل سدر جبلي. Had the marks stayed, the slug would be 22 characters and 122 encoded, because every mark is encoded as six characters just like a letter. The diacritics alone would nearly double the encoded length.
Why the marks come out of the URL
- A URL is sometimes typed by a customer or searched for, and nobody types vowel marks into an address bar. A slug with diacritics will not match what people type.
- A marked word and an unmarked one are different characters to a server. If the marks stayed, the same product could end up with two possible URLs depending on how the title was typed.
- The marks add encoded length, as you saw, without adding any meaning a reader sees in the URL.
What goes and what stays
Removed: fatha, damma and kasra, every form of tanween, shadda, sukun, the small dagger alef, Quranic annotation signs, and the tatweel that stretches a word for decoration. A title with a tatweel stretching the word عسل still gives the slug عسل-سدر.
Kept: hamza forms, because they are letters, not marks. قُرْآن كَرِيم becomes قرآن-كريم, madda and all. Ta marbuta and alef maksura stay too. Those change only if you turn on the normalization options in Arabic mode, which are off by default because they alter spelling.
The steps
- Open the URL slug generator and paste the vocalized title as it is; there is no need to strip the marks first.
- Choose Arabic or Latin mode. The removal happens in both.
- Look at the slug and its encoded length, then copy it.
What about the page title itself?
The tool only builds the slug and never touches the title in your store. If you want the title without diacritics as well, for a short description or a product file, use the Arabic diacritic remover, which works on the text itself and tells you how many marks of each kind it removed.
Common questions
Will the slug change if I add diacritics to the title later?
No. Converting the vocalized title again gives the same slug, because the marks are removed first.
Are diacritics removed in Latin mode with transliteration?
Yes, before transliterating, so the marks add no vowels to the result: عَسَلُ سِدْرٍ جَبَلِيّ gives asl-sdr-jbly.
Is the hamza removed from a word like سوداء?
No. The hamza is a letter and stays in the slug.
