How do I strip EXIF from WebP images for my website without re-encoding them?
Open the WebP in the tool and press 'Remove metadata': it drops the EXIF and XMP chunks, updates the VP8X flags and the RIFF size so the file stays valid, and leaves the image data untouched. It handles one file at a time, and animation chunks and anything else it does not remove are left in place and listed.
Why not just convert the image and be done?
The easy way to strip data from any image is to redraw it, for example by converting it with a format converter. But the WebP images on your site were probably compressed with care to balance size against quality, and re-encoding adds fresh loss on top of the first and can change the size you tuned. If all you want is for the data to disappear, there is no reason to touch the pixels.
What happens inside a WebP file
A WebP file is a RIFF container split into named chunks. The image data sits in a VP8 or VP8L chunk. When the file has extras, it starts with a VP8X chunk whose flags announce what the file holds: alpha, a color profile, EXIF, XMP, animation. On removal, the tool:
- Drops the EXIF chunk and the XMP chunk entirely.
- Clears the EXIF and XMP flags in VP8X, so the file does not announce chunks that are no longer there.
- Rewrites the RIFF size in the file header to match the new length.
- Copies the image data and every other chunk as they are.
- Also drops the ICCP chunk, clearing its flag, if you untick the option to keep the color profile.
The tool then decodes both files in your browser and compares the pixels, and re-scans the output to show a before and after list.
Steps for your site's images
- Open a WebP in the Image metadata inspector and remover tool. You will see the VP8X flags in the list, then whatever EXIF, XMP and ICCP the file holds.
- Keep the ICC color profile unless you have a reason to drop it.
- Press 'Remove metadata' and check the verification: same dimensions, identical pixels.
- Download the clean copy and upload it in place of the original under the same name if you want your site's links to stay unchanged.
- Repeat for the next image. The tool processes one file at a time.
Limits
- Animated WebP: the ANIM chunk and the frames stay as they are, since the tool will not remove anything that could break the animation. Only EXIF and XMP go, if present.
- Chunks the tool does not recognise stay and appear in the list with their name and size.
- Simple WebP files without VP8X usually carry no EXIF at all, and the tool will tell you so.
- If your goal is a smaller file or a different format, that is a job for the Image format converter, which redraws the image.
Common questions
Will the file still work in every browser after removal?
The tool updates the flags and size, then verifies by decoding the output in your browser. If the check fails, the file is not offered for download at all.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. Alpha data is part of the image and is not touched.
Is there batch processing for all my site's images?
No. The tool works on one file at a time.
