I buy coffee and spices in small packs: how do I show the price per 100 g instead of per kilo?
After entering the packs, choose per 100 g from the Show cost list. The tool recalculates every option's cost on that base, so you read figures close to the amounts you actually buy. Changing the base changes only the numbers shown; the cheapest option and the percentage gap stay exactly the same.
Why per kilo gets confusing here
When you buy cardamom, saffron or specialty coffee in 100 or 250 g packs, a per-kilo price becomes a large number that matches nothing in your hand. A figure like 72 per kilo for coffee you buy a quarter kilo at a time does not help you picture it, while 7.20 per 100 g is closer to the cup and the recipe.
Example: coffee in two packs
A 250 g bag of coffee at 18 and a 1 kg bag at 65. Here are the results on three display bases:
- Per 100 g: 7.20 for the small bag and 6.50 for the large one.
- Per kg: 72 for the small bag and 65 for the large one.
- Per g: 0.072 for the small bag and 0.065 for the large one.
- In all three, the large bag is the Best value and the small one is 10.77% more expensive.
Notice the tool shows up to four decimals when needed, so a per-gram price of 0.072 is not flattened to 0.07 and small gaps in small units are not lost.
Steps
- In the Unit-price comparison tool, enter each pack with its price and weight, in g or kg as printed.
- Under Show cost choose per 100 g.
- For liquids such as rose water or fragrance oils, enter them in ml and choose per 100 ml.
- Copy the result if you want to keep it in your purchasing notes.
If you sell coffee or spices
A per-100 g view also helps when you price your own product. If you buy cardamom by the kilo and sell it in 100 g packs, the supplier's cost per 100 g is the starting point for your pack's cost; add the pouch, label and shipping, then work out the selling price with the Selling-price calculator. If the supplier gives you a discount per kilo, apply it first with the Discount calculator.
And remember that a weight comparison says nothing about quality: fresh specialty coffee and beans ground months ago can cost the same per 100 g and taste nothing alike.
Common questions
Does the base change which option is cheapest?
No. The base only changes how the numbers are shown; the ranking and percentages are fixed.
Which display bases exist for weight?
Per kg, per 100 g, per g, per lb and per oz.
Does the tool remember the base I chose?
No. It returns to the default base when you switch to a different kind of unit or reopen the page.
