I ship books and perfume in small boxes: why does the calculator say the actual weight applies, not the volumetric one?
Because the chargeable weight is the larger of the two, and books or glass perfume bottles are heavy for the space they take up, so their weight on the scale is far above their volumetric weight. The calculator is not wrong. It is telling you the box is not your problem: the weight itself is what you pay for.
What the numbers say
A carton of books, 30 × 20 × 15 cm, weighing 9 kg, with 5000 as an example divisor. The result:
- Volume 9,000 cm³, and a volumetric weight of just 1.8 kg.
- The actual weight is 9 kg, five times the volumetric one, so the chargeable weight is 9 kg (19.84 lb).
- Weight that applies reads Actual weight, with an explanation that the package is heavy for its size.
Why a smaller box saves nothing
Try shrinking the carton to 25 × 20 × 15 cm: the volumetric weight drops to 1.5 kg, but the chargeable weight stays at 9 kg. Try a 6000 divisor on the original box: volumetric becomes 1.5 kg, and chargeable is still 9 kg. As long as the actual weight is larger, neither the box nor the divisor moves the bill.
That runs against the usual advice sellers hear about downsizing boxes. The advice is right for light, bulky products such as pillows and toys. For books, perfume, spices and tinned goods, your attention belongs elsewhere.
What does cut the cost for heavy products
- Packing materials: thick double-wall cartons and heavy fillers add real weight. Try lighter fillers that protect just as well.
- Presentation boxes: a heavy luxury perfume box is part of the chargeable weight, so know its weight and put it in your costs.
- Weight bands: find where the next price band starts in your carrier's table. Splitting a heavy order or combining two can come out cheaper.
Using the tool for this kind of product
- Enter the packed carton and its scale weight in the Volumetric shipping-weight calculator.
- Look at the distance between the volumetric and actual weight. If it is wide, stop worrying about the box size.
- Use the actual weight for your shipping cost, and price the product on that basis with the Selling-price calculator.
In a mixed carton, books with cushions for example, it can flip, because cushions add volume with almost no weight. Then run the mixed carton as it is, and do not assume the answer in advance.
Common questions
Does volumetric weight matter at all if the actual weight wins?
It does not change the bill, but it shows how much room you have before a bigger box would become the problem.
What if the two weights are equal?
The tool says Both are equal, and the chargeable weight is that same figure.
Does the tool know some carriers have special terms for perfume?
No, it only calculates weights. Terms for liquids or restricted goods come from your carrier.
