My corner watermark gets cut off in my Instagram profile grid, where should I place it instead?

Move it closer to the middle. Profile grids and post previews usually trim the edges of a photo and keep its center, so a mark tucked into a corner is the first thing to go. Raise the margin, or use bottom center with an upward offset, or repeat the mark across the whole photo so it does not matter which part gets trimmed.

Why the grid cuts what the post shows

The post itself shows your whole photo, but the profile grid shows every post as a thumbnail of one shape, and if your photo is a different shape the extra is trimmed off the edges. Instagram has changed its grid shape before, so we are not quoting an official size here: open your profile, see what it shows today, and keep the mark inside the area that stays visible.

A worked example

Take a 1080 × 1350 portrait photo and a text mark at size 30% whose box comes out at roughly 324 × 60 px. Suppose, for the example, that the grid shows a centered square: 135 px is lost at the top and 135 px at the bottom, and the visible band runs from row 135 to row 1215.

Worked example

Bottom right with a 3% margin: the mark is centered at 886 across and 1288 down, so it spans rows 1258 to 1318, entirely inside the trimmed strip.

Bottom right with a 15% margin: centered at 756 and 1158, spanning rows 1128 to 1188, so it stays visible.

Bottom center with a 3% margin and a vertical offset of -12%: centered at 540 and 1158, also visible and in the middle of the width.

Note that the margin and offsets are measured from the image width, not its height: a 15% margin on a 1080 px wide photo is about 162 px from each edge.

How to do it

  1. Open the Image watermark editor tool and pick the photos you are about to post.
  2. Under 'Single mark', pick a spot on the 3×3 grid, then raise 'Margin from the edge' step by step. Its maximum is 25%.
  3. Or pick 'Bottom center' and type a negative number in 'Vertical offset' to lift the mark.
  4. Check the preview and download, then post one photo and look at it in your grid before posting the rest.

The option no crop can defeat

If your photos go to several platforms, each with its own thumbnail habits, consider 'Repeat across the image' at a low opacity. Whatever part of the photo is shown will carry a copy of the mark. And if you would rather decide yourself what is visible, crop the photo before posting with the Image cropper and watermark the cropped version.

Common questions

Should I just put the mark dead center?

The center is never trimmed, but it usually covers the product. Bottom center with an upward offset is a good compromise.

Does the tool resize my photo to fit the grid?

No. The photo comes out at the same size; the tool only adds the mark.

Can I drag the mark into place with the mouse?

No. The position comes from the grid, the margin and the offsets only, which is what keeps it identical on every photo.
